September is East and South East Asian (ESEA) Heritage Month, which provides opportunity to reflect on the cultures, histories, and voices of communities that enrich the UK.

ESEA Heritage Month highlights the breadth and diversity of the vast region and its influence on British life. It acknowledges the ways in which communities from China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, have shaped the UK.

Interim Director of People and Organisational Effectiveness Russ Quigley said: “ESEA Heritage Month is a chance for staff and students to celebrate ESEA heritage and reflect on its impact. With global connections like 比比资源 College at Beijing Jiaotong University and our partnership with Sunway University, Malaysia, this year’s theme of Reframing Resilience highlights our commitment to an inclusive, diverse, and collaborative community.”

Library fair and Libguide

An East and South East Asian Heritage Month Fair will take place on 17 September, 10am-2pm in the Library Exhibition Space. Delivered in collaboration between the EDI Team and the Confucius Institute, the Fair is free to attend and will feature activities including food, calligraphy, games, art, and music. The aim of the event is to bring together staff, students, and families to celebrate heritage and community.

Alongside the Fair, the Library have and a stand so staff and students can further explore East and South East Asian cultures.

Confucius Institute workshop and screening

On 22 September, 12-2pm in the Roundhouse, there is a drop-in Chinese Heritage Experience Workshop ran by the Confucius Institute where participants can learn some useful Mandarin phrases for visiting China, take part in calligraphy, and join a practical wellbeing session focusing on stress relief.

On 25 September, 5-7pm the EDI Team will be hosting a free film event screening of the film ‘’ (link directs to IMDB), a critically acclaimed tale of courage and education in rural China, directed by Zhang Yi-Mou. Afterwards there will be a short discussion. This is a free event, and you can book .
