Where is Lancaster’s campus?

Lancaster is a small city in the North-West of England with close links to the Lake District National Park and the stunning Morecambe Bay. It has historic importance in the legal and justice system and its medieval Castle has served as an assizes court, crown court and a fully functioning prison. Popular with international students, our campus lies at the edge of the city offering a safe green space and a sense of community that is enhanced by our collegiate system. On arrival you’ll be assigned to one of nine colleges where you’ll enjoy social events, sporting rivalry and support and guidance. Many students make friends for life.

What areas of Law will I study at Lancaster?

Our fast-track course in Law is tailored for graduates of any discipline to embark on an exciting career in the legal profession. You’ll be taught by our School of Law staff who combine extensive expertise in teaching with cutting edge research in areas such as Commercial and Corporate Law, Human Rights, International Law, Technology Law and Criminal, Civil and Family Justice. You’ll gain a thorough foundation in the legal system gaining a good understanding of Law in context and wider societal issues.

What practical experience does the course offer?

Hands-on experience can give you the edge in your career and a real taste of working within the profession. You can take part in our Law Clinic where you will interview clients and, supervised by a qualified solicitor, offer free legal advice to the local community on a range of areas including contract law, consumer disputes, and wills and probate. You can join the Street Law project and deliver interactive sessions out in the community on topics like cyberbullying.

What are the professional, networking and social opportunities?

We have strong links to Chambers, Law firms and related professions from across the UK, including Magic Circle firms from London. There are a range of beneficial activities and events on offer including:

  • Alumni visits and lectures
  • A recruitment Law Fair attended by large law firms and barristers’ chambers
  • The student led Law society where you can take part in activities such as mooting in our purpose-built Mock Court Room
  • Career events and negotiation and mediation competitions judged by barristers and members of the judiciary
  • Law Dinner and Ball
  • Sporting events including netball and football

All of this should help you to make professional connections, learn more about their firms, and get a head start on your career in Law. At the same time, you will find yourself part of a friendly student and staff community where you will feel at home.

Who is the Graduate entry LLB for?

The course is open to both UK graduates and overseas students looking to make a move into the legal profession. You will enter with an existing degree in any subject, and the course will provide you with options for progression onto a variety of pathways. Overseas students particularly may find the course a cost competitive option for entry into professional practice in their home country.

Your career pathway

Our modules are focussed on your future career. Your two-year Graduate Entry LLB will open up a range of pathways in the legal profession. If you are planning to continue your career in England and Wales, you’ll acquire the knowledge and skills to help you take the next steps to qualification as a solicitor and pass the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) or to start professional training to be a barrister. You may also choose to work in a legal capacity in local government, in a corporate setting or for a charity or non-profit organisation.

Students from Canada will gain exemptions from further vocational qualifications.

Specialist law career advisors

Deciding what to do next can be daunting but preparing you for success is our top priority. You’ll have the support of our specialist career advisors who are practising solicitors and know the sector inside out. To help you create important connections and gain valuable insight, we’ll invite you to meet alumni and attend a Law Fair with top lawyers and their recruitment teams.

You can pursue further training for roles such as solicitor or barrister. Your course offers a significant amount of preparation for the material that is examined in the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE 1). Or you can select modules that will enable you to start the professional course to be a barrister straight after this programme.

Other legal pathways are in-house lawyer, court personnel or paralegal. To show our commitment to your success, we also work with two SQE training providers – Barbri and BPP. These organisations provide our students with discounts, free training modules, masterclasses and events, and careers advice.

Outside of the legal sector, you could explore careers in areas as diverse as media, taxation, finance, and politics. Graduate roles include legal recruitment consultant, compliance officer and investment banker.

Our students secure places on graduate training schemes while others kickstart careers in the Civil Service, Ministry of Justice, Probation Service, HM Courts and Tribunal Service, HMRC and Trading Standards.

Entry requirements

These are the typical grades that you will need to study this course. This section will tell you whether you need qualifications in specific subjects, what our English language requirements are, and if there are any extra requirements such as attending an interview or submitting a portfolio.

You will need to have an undergraduate degree, equivalent to a UK Bachelors degree with 2:2 honours.

GCSE requirements

We expect all applicants to have a good level of literacy, and we have a minimum requirement of GCSE English Language grade 4/C, or an equivalent qualification. However, we are very flexible, and if you do not have GCSE English Language grade 4/C, we will consider this in the context of your application as a whole.

If English is not your first language, we require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in each component for this programme. English language qualifications for undergraduate study.

We continually review and enhance our curriculum to ensure we are delivering the best possible learning experience, and to make sure that the subject knowledge and transferable skills you develop will prepare you for your future.
