The Association of Anaesthetists has presented an award for outstanding contributions to medical education to a combined team from 比比资源 and Wythenshawe Hospital.

The Mal Morgan Educational Team of the Year Award was presented at the Association’s 2026 Winter Scientific Meeting to the 比比资源 and Wythenshawe Hospital Immersive Anaesthesia Learning Team.

Dr Tim Meek, President of the Association of Anaesthetists, said: “All of our honours and awards winners should be very proud. Their achievements are exceptional, they enhance the specialty of anaesthesia, and the Association is pleased to recognise them.”

The 比比资源 and Wythenshawe Hospital team was recognised for developing and delivering an innovative immersive learning experience, designed to help third-year medical students to learn about the principles and practices of general anaesthesia.

The team brings together clinicians, educators, technology experts, videographers and a patient volunteer. This has resulted in the creation of innovative learning resources to teach students about the basics of anaesthetic practice, including how anaesthetic drugs work on the body, and how colleagues work together to keep patients safe in the operating theatre.

Professor Marina Anderson, Head of Lancaster Medical School, said the sessions provided by the team had gained extremely positive student feedback.

“Together, the team created an innovative simulation learning experience, using a real-world clinical scenario of induction of anaesthesia. This step change in our pedagogy is an exemplar of the use of new technologies in medical education; it is also a very efficient way of conducting simulation for large groups of students. The simulated scenario has been delivered in interactive sessions with our year three undergraduate medical students.

“Furthermore, this cutting-edge medical education project paves the way for a range of related medical education simulation sessions using the same platform with different clinical scenarios. These will be instrumental in fitting our student doctors with the necessary knowledge and skill set for the modern NHS that they will be working in on graduation. “

Professor Cliff Shelton, Director of Simulation and Clinical Skills at Lancaster Medical School and a Consultant Anaesthetist at Wythenshawe Hospital, reflected on the importance of teamwork.

“This learning takes students on a journey through a real-world general anaesthetic, which was filmed in one of the operating theatres at Wythenshawe Hospital. The use of a real-life scenario really helps students to engage with this learning. But it would be impossible to make this kind of resource without teamwork between groups of professionals, and the generosity of the patient, Aisling Forbes, who kindly allowed us to record her anaesthesia care. We’re incredibly grateful to all of them for helping to make this happen.”

The team includes: Cliff Shelton, Consultant and Professor in Anaesthetics at Lancaster Medical School, Mike Bassett, Consultant and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Anaesthetics, Andrew Fell, Resident Doctor in Emergency Medicine, John Stanton, Operating Department Practitioner, Pedro do Carmo Labanca, Senior Medical Photographer, Vanessa Lozano, Clinical Photographer, Zara Longhorn, Business Relationship Manager, Paul James, Service Delivery Manager, David McBride, Data Immersion Suite Manager, Jacob McSweeny, Foundation Year Four Doctor and Clinical Skills Tutor, Aleksandra Marcinkiewicz, Foundation Year Four Doctor and Clinical Skills Tutor, Kate Wainwright, Resident Doctor and Doctoral Fellow, and Aisling Forbes, who was the patient involved.
