Ongoing capital investment in Sports Centre facilities to enhance user experience
The University continues to invest in its sports facilities, with a rolling programme of improvements designed to enhance the experience for students, staff and the wider community.
The works focus on upgrading facilities, strengthening security measures and supporting the safe use of sports and fitness spaces across campus.
Summer 2025 – replacement of 3G astro pitch surface (World Rugby Accreditation & FA 11v11 Register) and delivery of improved pitch security with enhanced perimeter fencing and access-controlled turnstiles. In addition, the steam and sauna facilities were upgraded and a new accessible WC facility added.
Summer 2026 - replacement of Astro Pitch 2, helping to maintain the high standards required for hockey (FIH Level 3) and ensuring the facility continues to support both training and competitive play. As per the improved pitch security for the 3G pitch, the perimeter fencing around Astro Pitches 1 and 2 have been improved and the introduction of access-controlled turnstiles helps to protect the playing areas and improve safety.
Additional external improvements include the expansion of CCTV and new access-controlled turnstile gates at the tennis and netball courts, providing greater security while maintaining convenient access for customers.
Inside the Sports Centre, new turnstile/access gate entry systems have been introduced at key facilities, including the swimming pool, fitness suite, gym and strength and conditioning room. These measures will help improve access management and support the continued safe operation of the centre.
In the studio, the spinning bikes have also been replaced with Group Cycle bikes from Technogym. These bikes are crafted to the highest standards of comfort, performance and connectivity, featuring high power accuracy and on-the-fly settings.
The investment demonstrates the University's ongoing commitment to providing high-quality sports facilities that promote participation, wellbeing and performance, while ensuring users benefit from modern, secure and sustainable spaces for sport and recreation.
Further capital investment in the Sports Centre facilities will continue as part of the University's longer term estate development programme.
